Earthquakes per year

How many magnitude 4+ quakes happened each year. The tall bars line up with big earthquakes and the aftershocks that followed.

View as table

Fewer, bigger quakes

How many quakes there were at each magnitude. Each step up the side means ten times more quakes.

Used for the b-value Below the cutoff (undercounted)

The cutoff changes b

What b comes out to depending on where I put the cutoff. The shaded band is the margin of error (one standard error).

b-value by region

Does b change across the region? Each dot is a region's estimate and the line is its margin of error. The blue band is the overall estimate. Shallow quakes only, since the deep Hindu Kush ones behave differently.

Where they happen

Hover over a circle to see its magnitude and date. The map only has M4.5 and up, to keep the page light, and it shows quakes at every depth, including the deep Hindu Kush ones the b-values leave out.

Aftershocks after the biggest quakes

Take these counts as a rough guide. The 110 km box can miss aftershocks along a long rupture, and I only count M4.5 and up, so small aftershocks right after a big quake are probably missing. Nearby quakes also share aftershocks, so don't add the rows up.
